Is Your Mutual Fund Money Actually Safe?

Most families across South India assume their savings are protected. Tick what applies to you — most people score 4–6 out of 10 on their first try. Each unticked item is a real gap that can block your family from accessing your money.

Why Portfolio Hygiene Comes Before Investing

Most investment advice starts with "which fund should I buy?" That is the wrong first question. Before a single rupee should go into a new SIP, the foundations have to be sound — because a high-returning portfolio is worthless if your family cannot access it, or if your own KYC freezes your transactions at the worst moment.

This is the principle behind a simple practice: fix first, invest second. The ten checks above cover the gaps that most commonly trap South Indian families — and every one of them is fixable, usually within a few working days.

The four areas that matter most

1. KYC validation. Since 2025, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) requires investors to hold "Validated" KYC status, not merely "Registered". A name mismatch between PAN and Aadhaar — common when spellings differ, such as "Rajeswari" versus "Rajeshwari" — can quietly block new investments. Check free at cvlkra.com.

2. Nomination. A nominee is not the legal owner of your investments — they are a trustee. Without proper nomination aligned to a Will, your family could face a Succession Certificate process taking 12–18 months. SEBI's 2025 rules allow up to ten nominees per folio with percentage allocation.

3. Current contact and bank details. An outdated mobile number, email, or bank mandate can stall redemptions exactly when money is needed. These drift out of date silently over the years.

4. Old and unclaimed holdings. Dividends unclaimed for seven years, and the shares behind them, are transferred to the Investor Education and Protection Fund (IEPF). Physical share certificates from the 1980s–90s often hide real, recoverable wealth. Recovery is via Form IEPF-5 on mca.gov.in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my mutual fund KYC is valid?
Check free at cvlkra.com with your PAN. Since 2025, SEBI requires "Validated" status, not just "Registered". Unvalidated KYC can block new investments and freeze existing folios. A registered Mutual Fund Distributor can fix it across all your folios in 2–3 working days.
Is a nominee the same as a legal heir?
No. A nominee receives the assets as a trustee but may have to distribute them per the Will or succession law. Without proper nomination, legal heirs can contest, and the family may need a Succession Certificate taking 12–18 months.
What if I have no nominee and no Will?
Your family may need a Succession Certificate from a civil court before accessing the money — a process that can take 12–18 months and significant legal fees. Registering nominees and aligning them with a Will avoids this entirely.
Can I recover old unclaimed shares or dividends?
Yes. Dividends unclaimed for seven years and the related shares move to the IEPF, and are recoverable by filing Form IEPF-5 on mca.gov.in — typically 3–6 months.
